2012 Women’s Chess Championship (Khanty-Mansiysk)

The Women’s World Chess Championship starts today in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia (Siberia) with 64 of the strongest women players in the world. World Champion Hou Yifan headlines the field of players from around the world. India’s Humpy Koneru got invitation as the 2010 runner-up along with the two semi finalists Ruan Lufei and Zhao Xue, both of China.

Also in the field are the World Girl’s Junior Champions Anna Muzychuk (2010) and Deysi Cori (2011), 6 players by rating, 28 from the European Women’s Championships (2010 and 2011), 8 players from Americas, 12 players from Asia and Oceania and only 3 players from Africa, and two nominees of the FIDE President.

The tournament is taking place in what is quickly become the chess Mecca of the world, Khanty-Mansisyk, Russia and will determine the next challenger for China’s Hou. That match will take place next year.

Round #1 – Game #1

Alexander Khalifman noticed that while there was only one rating upset, the lower-rated players were competing very fiercely. In fact top-rated Humpy Koneru struggled mightily against South Africa’s Denise Frick who appeared to have a strong attack against the Kan Sicilian.

The women’s knockout tournament saw the favorites go through rather convincingly, but there will be several tiebreak matches. There were only six draws out of the 32 games played.

Round #2 – Game #2

Chess headlines used the word “shock” to describe Humpy Koneru’s loss to Natalia Zhukova in yesterday’s encounter. When Zhukova added another win at Humpy’s expense a bit more than a shock may have filled up the headlines. With Humpy suddenly whitewashed, a lot of quizzical looks and shrugged shoulders were additional expressions.

Hou Yifan bowed out of the tournament against Monika Socko.

After Humpy Koneru’s exit in the World Chess Cup, chess fans got an even bigger shock when Hou Yifan was bounced from the tournament by Poland’s Moniko Socko.

The picture above with Humpy and Natalia says a lot. I see purpose on Natalia’s face while I see nothing but anxiety on Humpy’s face. Too bad #1 and #2 are out so quickly.

Final – Game #1

The first game in the final of the Women’s World Chess Championship ended in a draw with Antoaneta Stefanova pressing for the win. In a bit of time pressure, the Bulgarian erred and allowed counterplay. Anna Ushenina was able to salvage a half-point.

Final – Game #2

An uneventful draw today in the Women’s Championship keeps the score knotted even. The seventeen-move draw had the makings of a struggle, but the tension was relieved quickly.

Ushenina moved to the brink of a World Championship with a rousing win in game three. The game was actually a crush after Stefanova seem to lose the thread of the position after 14…f5 15.Qb3 e5!?

Final – Game #4

Anna Ushenina of the Ukraine won the final in the Women’s World Chess Championship by beating Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria 1½-½ in rapids. The first game was a hard-fought 89- move draw with Stefanova pressing. Ushenina was able to hold in a double bishop ending.
