3rd Annual Harlem Chess Center Festival on September 29th!

In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, much has been said about how to help children deal with the event. Most would agree that children have to have an outlet to avoid becoming traumatized by repeated visions of horror shown by media institutions. Well… one activity that is sure to provide a safe and stimulating avenue is the fascinating game/sport of chess.

For the third year in a row,
GM Maurice Ashley will host this magnificent event in historic Harlem on Saturday, September 29th from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Last year's event was a smash success as children reveled in various activities including simultaneous exhibitions, tournaments, and an array of fun activities.  Last year, the children were treated to the brilliance of jazz and classical trumpeter Wynton Marsalis… a noble gesture by the music legend. This year, members of the New York Knickerbockers pro basketball team will make a return visit to the festival, and find out whether they have improved their chess skills since last year!

This will be a family activity and an opportune time for parents to share in the joys of chess with their child.  So come on out on Saturday, September 29th and bring the whole family… but most of all, bring any children that may enjoy a delightful challenge. Chess is a wonderful pastime and a great way to build a new family tradition!! Come on out!!
