GM Ashley's Harlem Chess Festival a rousing success despite rain!!

GM Maurice Ashley has inspired Blacks around the chess world with his success as a player and commentator. Prior to earning the GM title at the Manhattan International in March 1999, he coached at Harlem's Mott Elementary and earned media coverage for coaching the team to national titles. GM Ashley has maintained his commitment to inner-city youth and for the second year in a row has hosted the Harlem Chess Center Festival. This year was highlighted by the presence of jazz great Wynton Marsalis and players of the New York Knicks pro basketball team. Held on a rainy September 23rd, the weather couldn't dampen the spirit of the energetic and enthusiastic children. The event featured blitz chess, simuls, a raffle prizes (which included a game with actor Will Smith), and the support of the city and surrounding community. Also in attendance were GM Gennadi Sagalchik and wife, WGM Olga Sagalchik, FM Gregory Shahade, sister NM Jennifer Shahade, and chess coach, FM Sunil Weermantry.  Great job Maurice!!
