Burundi’s Chess President, Wilfried Ntamatungiro
Burundi became a member of FIDE in 1999, two years after launching the chess federation known as “Fédération de Jeu d’Echecs du Burundi” or the acronym, FECHEBU. On August 15th, they had their elections and Wilfried Ntamatungiro received 17/24 votes to become the incoming President. Formerly the rating official of FECHEBU, he will take the leadership from Deo Ntagasigumwami, a long-time member and national player.

Back in 2014, Africa Chess Media conducted an interview of Ntamatungiro in which he stated that he started playing as a 12-year old out of curiosity. Years later, he entered his first 4.2 Subzonal in Cairo, Egypt, losing eight from nine games. Now in 2021, he is a five-time national champion and the incoming President!

Le Burundi est devenu membre de la FIDE en 1999, deux ans après le lancement de la fédération d’échecs connue sous le nom de “Fédération de Jeu d’Echecs du Burundi” ou l’acronyme FECHEBU. Le 15 août, ils ont eu leurs élections et Wilfried Ntamatungiro a reçu 17/24 voix pour devenir le nouveau président. Ancien responsable de la notation de la FECHEBU, il prendra la direction de Deo Ntagasigumwami, membre de longue date et acteur national.

En 2014, Africa Chess Media a réalisé une interview de Ntamatungiro dans laquelle il a déclaré qu’il avait commencé à jouer à l’âge de 12 ans par curiosité. Des années plus tard, il a participé à son premier sous-zonal 4.2 au Caire, en Égypte, perdant huit en neuf matchs. Maintenant en 2021, il est cinq fois champion national et le nouveau président !
