Team Profile

The U.S. is trying to rebound from a woeful showing a the 2000 Olympiad where they place an abysmal 26th place. Traditionally vying for one of the top five positions, the American team was rocked by inconsistent performances and shocking losses to both young India and Cuba.

The U.S. will field the same combination as in the previous decade with a mixture of the same U.S. players and Russian émigrés. There was some talk of recent émigré
GM Alexander Onishuk (now residing in Denver for the past two years) playing for the U.S., but apparently the negotiations with the INS fell through.

It's hard to predict which U.S. team will show up in this tournament… the underachieving team of Olympiad 2000, or the team nearly winning outright in Olympiad 1998. Super-solid
GM Gregory Kaidanov will lead a team of U.S. champions… GM Larry Christiansen being the current.
