Round #5 - Peter Myers (Jamaica)

ELLIOTT, PORTER LEAD 2005 LASCO NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPS

Defending champion FIDE Master Warren Elliott and National Master Russell Porter carved out a slim lead, after 5 rounds of play in the 2005 LASCO National Chess Championships, currently taking place at the Norman Manley Law School.

Round 4 action on Saturday resulted in wins for Elliott, Porter, Matthews, Richards and Lorne over Wheeler, Rowe, Holness, Myers and Brown respectively. The game between Byfield and Pitterson ended in a draw.

In round 5 on Sunday, there were wins for Elliott, Porter, Byfield and Holness, over Matthews, Richards, Lorne and Brown respectively. The other two matches between Pitterson and Myers, Rowe and Wheeler both ended in draws.

At the end of round 5 on Sunday, the standings were as indicated below.

1. FM Warren Elliott (4 pts.)

1. NM Russel Porter (4 pts.)

3. NM Geoffrey Byfield (3˝ pts.)

3. NM Jomo Pitterson (3˝ pts.)

5. NM Shane Matthews (3 pts.)

6. NM Duane Rowe (2˝ pts.)

6. NM Malaku Lorne (2˝ pts.)

8. NM Mark Holness (2˝ pts.)

9. NM Robert Wheeler (1˝ pts.)

10. Equitable Brown (1 pts.)

10. Deborah Richards (1 pts.)

10. Peter Myers (1 pts.)

My game of round 4 was Myers vs Richards. I thought Richards’ play was clinical. I keep telling people that I was lost from move 6. This is because it was at that point that I thought I had won a pawn and could hold on to it. I held on to the pawn right down to the end of the game, the problem however was that I got checkmated before I could make use of it!

My brief comment on the other 5 games of round 4 are as follows:

Porter vs Rowe - Rowe blundered badly at move 25, where he should have played Qg8 instead of Rf1. Time pressure has that effect sometimes.

Matthews vs Holness - From move 8, Holness began to make a series of inferior moves, in his pet system! Shane has that effect sometimes.

Brown vs Lorne – After move 16 Lorne should have taken complete control. Eventually he did take the game, after Brown blundered again on moves 22 and 23.

Wheeler vs Elliott – Wheeler might as well have started without a queen. He took her too far from the action, especially on move 19.

Byfield – Pitterson – Coward man keep sound bones! When are we going to get to the next level people?!

* * *

My game of round 5 was Elliott vs Matthews – Shane had too many weaknesses. Elliott did well in capitalizing on them.

My comments on the other round 5 games are as follows:

Pitterson vs Myers - I had a win in the end, but time pressure made it too risky to try to analyze it out, so I ended up with the draw.

Lorne vs Byfield – Lorne let Byfield back into the game with a dubious sacrifice at move 34.

Holness vs Brown – At move 13 Brown should have played Ne4, which would have given him a decisive advantage.

Rowe vs Wheeler – Argghh

Richards vs Porter – Experience can prevail even when your opponent has a material advantage.

The Championship continues this Saturday and Sunday at the Norman Manley Law School starting at 1 P.M., when rounds 6 and 7 are schedule to take place.

Please note that the two Round 3 games that were not reported in the last report saw Pitterson defeating Brown and Wheeler and Holness playing to a draw.
