1. e4 c6 2. Nc3 d5 3. d4 dxe4 4. Bc4 Nf6 5. f3 b5!? This is an interesting choice, but black has other worthy alternatives: 5... exf3 6. Nxf3 Bf5 7. Ne5 e6 8. O-O Bxc2! This may seem greedy, but it works.(8... Bg6 is also fine. 9. g4?! overly ambitious but thematic for white. 9... Nbd7 10. Nxg6 hxg6 11. g5 Qc7! 12. Bf4 Bd6 13. gxf6 Bxf4 14. fxg7 Be3+ and white resigned in Porrasmaa vs. Lobzhanidze) 9. Qxc2 (9. Nxf7 Kxf7 10. Qg4 Qd7 11. Bg5 b5! Black is clearly better.) (9. Qe2 Bg6 10. d5 Bc5+ 11. Kh1 cxd5) 9... Qxd4+ winning. 5... Nbd7 is the safe an reliable alternative. 6. Nxe4 (6. fxe4 e5 7. Nf3) 6... e6 7. Ne2 Be7 8. O-O Qb6 9. Kh1 O-O 10. c3 c5 11. dxc5 Nxc5 12. Nxf6+ Bxf6= 5... e5 Unambitious but playable, giving back the material for rapid development. 6. dxe5 Qxd1+ 7. Kxd1 exf3 8. Nxf3 Ng4 9. Ke2 Nd7 10. Bf4 Nb6 11. Bb3 Slightly better for white, but nothing terrifying.
