South African International Master Watu Kobese competed in the Hastings Masters tournament (ending January 6th) scoring 7-3 for joint 3rd. Nine Grandmasters competed and Valerij Neverov of the Ukraine won with an undefeated 8-2.
Kobese alternated draws and wins in the first four rounds. He was held by Francis Rayner (2212) of Wales and Nicholas Tavoularis (2211) of Greece. He then stumbled twice including a loss to GM Mark Hebden and ended the tournament with four consecutive wins.
Other notable players were Israel's GM Sergey Erenburg (7½-2½), Russia's GM Vladimir Belov (7-3), 15-year old Ukrainian star GM Yuriy Kuzubov (6½-3½) and Indian prodigy IM Parimarjan Negi (6-4).
