Cuban International Arbiter Serafin Chuit arrived in Jamaica at about 12:30 am on Friday, 17th March, 2006 for a five-day visit. Senor Chuit is in Jamaica as a guest of the Jamaica Chess Federation. This is his first visit to Jamaica and he said that he was looking forward to it because he has heard nothing but good things about the country.
Born on the 3rd September, 1950 Senor Chuit is a very competent chess player and duly became a Cuban National Master. His love of the sport caused him to broaden his horizon and he developed a strong interest in the rules of the game.
When he was just sixteen years old he was an assistant arbiter at the 1966 Havana Chess Olympiad and saw a number of legendary players in action including such greats as the former world champions the Latvian genius Mikhail Tal and the rampaging American Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer.
A secretary of the Cuban Chess Federation, Senor Chuit became an International Arbiter in 1984 and since then has had a tremendous career. Among other things, he has officiated in Ten Capablanca Memorial Tournaments, the 1996 World Junior Championships in Colombia, the 1999 FIDE World Chess Championships in Las Vegas, USA and the last five Chess Olympiads. He also did duty in the match between his countryman Grandmaster Lazaro Bruzon and World Championship Candidate finalist Dutch Grandmaster Jan Timman in Curacao.
During his stay Senor Chuit will conduct several Arbiter seminars. He will also set an Arbiter's examination with successful individuals having the chance to become a FIDE Arbiter. The first seminar will take place at 5 pm on Saturday, 18th March, 2006 at RBTT, Dominica Drive, New Kingston and the second one will be at 10 am on Sunday, 19th March, 2006 at Holy Childhood High School (library).
