2004 Chess Olympiad: Battle for 2nd place begins

At press time, the Ukraine has drawn all four boards against Georgia and with one round to play have essentially locked up the gold medal. The Chinese women hold a 3-point bulge… Xie Jun and Humpy Koneru have drawn their game on board #1 thus far. Play still in progress.

Before the tournament, most analysts picked the
Russian men as favorites, but untimely losses have prevented a successful defense the Olympiad title.  On the other hand the Chinese women have continued their Olympiad dominance and are poised to win yet another team gold. India is still in a medal hunt in both the men's and women's competition.
