Bert Scott, "FIDE Master Warren Elliott scores easy win at U.W.I. Open," Jamaican Ambassadors Chess Academy."

FIDE Master Warren Elliott blew away a strong field of 20 players, including 7 National Masters, to scored a very easy win at the 2003 UWI Open Chess Championship on Saturday and Sunday, November 22-23.

FM Elliott, the Jamaica Open and Jamaica Blitz Champion, tallied an unbeaten score of 5½/6 including a convincing third round victory over Jamaica Champion
NM Shane Matthews, and a second round win over Jamaica newest National Master, Ras Malaku Lorne. For his fine performance, FM Elliott took home the UWI Trophy and J$10,000. NM Shane Matthews finished second with 4/6 on tie break.

The 2003 UWI Open, played at the spacious
Rex Nettleford Auditorium, was one of the strongest open tournament played in Jamaica in recent times. However, the strength of the event was somewhat diminished by the fourth round withdrawal of both NM Mark Smith and NM Ras Malaku Lorne after disappointing results on the first day.
