FM Muhammad qualifies for U.S. Championship at Chicago Open!!

One such player with the red laser dot aimed at a spot to compete in the 2003 U.S. Championship is FM Stephen Muhammad. The Georgia resident came off a triumph at the recent Georgia State Championship, tying with IM Carlos Perdomo for the state's title.

With "eyes on the prize," FM Muhammad traveled to compete in the Chicago Open. While he claimed that his performance was "nothing special," at 4½-2½ he earned a share of 1st U2400 prize and a slot to compete in the 2003 U.S. Championship!

FM Stephen Muhammad

One pivotal round was in round five against IM Benjamin Finegold. At a crucial point in the game, he had two options leading to the win of a rook. FM Muhammad did proceed to win a rook, but in doing so, he allowed a perpetual check. The other option was merely a different move order but would've netted the rook and the full point.

Nevertheless, FM Muhammad will join
GM Maurice Ashley at the 2003 U.S. championships in Seattle. He will also compete in this year's World Open. Muhammad continues to shine!
