My dear brother in Chess:

We have completed three tournaments in the First African American Unity Chess Tournament Series (UCTS). The games have been worthwhile; but .there have‑not been enough of them: (We would appreciate comments  from you brothers out there who have been receiving the bulletins. The subject of the 3rd African American Unity Chess Tournament was a line of the Meran Variation of the Semi-Slav QGD. The eight players produced sixteen games. What do you think of them?)

The tournament was won by Maurice Ashley. According to the conditions of the competition, Ashley got his $20 entry fee back, but the rest of the $150 first prize money went into the "Continue the Unity Fund". (may add to the funds) Ronald Simpson won three games, for 2nd place and $100. Mark Meeres, Vincent Leon Munro and Willie "Pop(s)"Johnson split $90 in a tie for 3rd‑4th‑Sth. Once again; the rest of the field got their money back, because the prize fund guarantees eight winners. (one player who did not meet the entry criteria‑was allowed to play in order to facilitate pairings.)

Three tournaments have brought out only seven players who have met the original 'qualification Criteria. Does this mean the entry standards were too high? Maybe there are not enough 2100+ players in the Metropolitan New York, area to carry the load. I was hoping to. get strong representation from the "Philadelphia contingent", but the distance may be too great for a one‑day tournament. Based on this thinking, the last tournament in the first UCTS – to be held on April 4th ‑- has 'been opened up to players who have over‑the‑board ratings of 2000+.

If you plan to play in the New York Open (April 15th‑19th), this is your chance to get in some tough practice in a tough line. Post‑mortems ‑‑ with all the players in the tournament pitching in ‑‑ are added reasons for participating: See the tournament announcement following the bulletin.
