2013 North American Open (Las Vegas)

While GM Giorgi Kacheishvili’s win of the 2013 North American Open is not much of a surprise, what was more surprising is the players who showed up. More on that later.

Kacheishvili tied with seven other players, but won on superior tiebreaks to take home $297 more than his co-winners. The National Open is traditionally held just after the Christmas holidays and attracted some interesting company.

China sent a contingent of strong players including Yi Wei who created a sensation in the World Cup Knockout tournament. He placed 2nd and was followed by GM Sergey Erenburg, GM Timur Gareev, GM Aleksandr Shimanov, GM Varuzhan Akobian, GM Aleksandr Lenderman and China’s IM Chen Wang all earning $2659.63.

Twenty-one year old Chinese Rui Gao tallied 5.5/9. Besides China, several Canadian nationals performed well. Colombia’s IM Joshua Ruiz got a strong 6/9. Las Vegas seems to attract the international players and GM Maurice Ashley hopes that this will be a selling point of his Millionaire Chess Open next October.
