Brewington Hardaway has earned his first International Master norm at the NY City Winter IM Norm Invitational with 6/9. After barely missing his first norm last month, he posted to Twitter about his last-round loss to IM Aaron Grabinsky. Despite the setback, he gained 66 FIDE Elo points putting him over 2300 and earning the FIDE Master title. He followed this effort with an IM norm and 25 more Elo points.

Notice that Hardaway was successful in scoring 2/2 his last two rounds. The last-round loss against Grabinsky was disheartening because he only needed a draw. Nevertheless, the two wins to earn the norm showed his tremendous spirit and will to win.

With the FM title, Hardaway now joins the legion of young scholastic talent in the U.S. with Master-level FIDE titles. The National K8 champion is active on chesskid.com, and last June wrote an article on how he earned the National Master title at age 10. Having done articles in the past, it appears that “Brew” has a future in chess writing. For now, he and his family celebrate his latest accomplishment!
