  1. Round #3 – Game #2
    Sunday, 18 November 2012

Five players through… top seeds hold

Antoaneta Stefanova swept Monika Socko to go through to the fourth round of the women’s championship. Socko’s victory over Hou Yifan was a high point, but she was trying to rebound from a game where she lost a clear piece. In this game, she was ground down slowly after Stefanova collected material and the full point.

Marie Sebag of France also advanced with a fortuitous win over Alisa Galliamova. In the second game, the Russia had to avoid repetition in order to have a chance at saving the match. However, she scampered away with her queen and ended up in a mating net.

Top seed Zhao Xue still holding her board.

Asia has done well in this tournament and China still has three players in the running. Zhao Xue mauled Mariya Muzychuk in 27 moves to advance to the next round and hold her top seed board. Dronavali Harika of India moved to the second round with a win over Lela Javakhishvili. She is the last hope for India after Humpy Koneru bowed out in the second round.

The Kosintseva sisters battled to another draw and no one has blinked yet. Both games were draw, but hard-fought. Huang Qian even the score with Irina Krush crushing her in an English. Marie Sebag, an unheralded GM from France closed out her match beating Alisa Galliamova 2-0.
