Husbands, Prescod and Yearwood Take Sagicor Chess Honours

Central America & the Caribbean Boys Under-14 Gold Medalist and defending Sagicor Under-20 Junior Chess Champion, Orlando Husbands of The Lodge School, successfully defended his title and joined the exclusive club of FIDE Masters Delisle Warner and Martyn Del Castilho to become the 3rd player to win back-to-back Sagicor Open Junior Chess titles.

Husbands cruised to his second Sagicor title with 6½ points, compliments of a round 6 win against Lawrence Depradine of Barbados Community College and a final round draw against Girls Under-20 CARIFTA Gold Medalist, Katrina Blackman of the UWI Cave Hill Academy of Sport.

Barbados Under-14 Champion, Yu Tien Poon of The Lodge School, finished in 2nd position with 6 points while Guyana’s Under 20 Champion Haifeng Su was 3rd with 5 points.

Asabi Layne from the UWI Cave Hill Academy of Sport took 4th place on the tie-break from Depradine who placed 5th and Trinidad’s Samantha Seecharan who was 6th. Seecharan over-took Katrina Blackman in the last round by ½-point to win the Best Girl Prize in the Under-20 category.

Bryan Prescod of the Lodge School is the new Sagicor Under-16 Champion. He took the title with 6 points on the tie-break from school mate Jerome Harewood, but not after a tough final round win against Allon Richards of Foundation School.

Richards and Trinidad’s Sylvan Yearwood place 4th and 5th respectively, while O’Shara Mason of The Lodge School took the Best Girl Prize with 4 points to round out a strong performance by the students of The Lodge School.

The Sagicor Under-12 category was a family affair with the Trinidadian sister and brother pair of Shannon and Sean Yearwood facing off in the last round against the Warner brothers of Giovani and Miguel. The Trinis prevailed to top the standings with 6 ½ points thus crowning Shannon Yearwood as the first girl to win Sagicor Under 12 Championship and the Yearwoods as the first siblings to take 1st and 2nd in the 28 year history of the Open Junior.

Kyle Sandiford of Providence Elementary placed 3rd with 5 points and Christopher Burnett of St. Cyprian Boys, thanks to a strong finish of three consecutive wins, was 4th with 4 ½.

Giovanni Warner of Arthur Smith Primary took 5th position on the tie-break with 4 points from Barbados Under-12 Champion Luke Cardoza of Harrison College, Miguel Warner, his brother who also of Arthur Smith, and Paul Mondesir of St. Paul’s Primary.
