Coming of Kings… Empowerment through Chess
“Teaching young men to be the leaders
they were born to be”
“Coming of Kings” is a community organization based in Baltimore, Maryland is using chess as platform “to involve boys in positive interaction with positive successful men in preparation for adolescence and adulthood.” The group meets every Saturday for sessions on a wide range of topics, but one of the main activities is chess.
Many organizations have recognized the benefits of chess as a tool for critical thinking, analytical prowess and better discipline. What is different is that Coming of Kings is specifically targeted to boys which is more common with civic organizations such as fraternities, civic organizations, and religious groups. Looking at the photo, it appears that there is a hands-on approach and the boys are fully engaged in the process. Some of the activities apparently take place at Morgan State University, one of the 107 Historically-Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).
Why is this needed? The official website gives their programmatic approach:
The greatest barriers in most young men’s lives are crime, family support, male role models, and lack of financial resources. Coming of Kings programs will instill confidence and social skills in young men to overcome their barriers to living a crime-free and self-sufficient life. Our programs consist of:
- Teaching and Mentoring
- Recreational activities (Playing Chess)
- Social Learning and Cultural Awareness
