10-year old Josh Colas over 2000!

Josh Colas

Joshua Colas has been making progress since he began playing chess four years ago and got his first rating of 681. With a heavy dose of blitz and a bit of professional coaching, Colas has now broken the “Expert” barrier of 2000 rating points. This is a status above a class player and signifies that a player is now progressing to become a Master.

At this rate, Colas is bound to break Master in another year or two. He has already defeated the likes of IM Jay Bonin. He has worked with GMs Maurice Ashley and Gregory Kaidanov.

At press time, he is competing at the 2009 Chicago Open.

  1. I first saw Josh playing his father Guy Colas in blitz chess at the World Open a few years ago. He had not started his ascent yet. However, when I saw him play blitz and showed him one of my games, I was able to see his talent and tactical eye. At age 10, he’s going to shatter the record for U.S. Master of African descent set last year by Kassa Korley (at 14 years, 10 months). Before Kassa broke the record it had stood for almost 30 years!

  2. Add Darrian Robinson to your list… she just made Expert too! However, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. You can still show the young whipper-snappers a thing or three. 🙂

  3. I just want to give a shout-out to lil Joshua for having reached an incredible milestone in his brief chess career. I also want to congratulate his Dad for his unwavering support in seeing that Joshua gets the needed exposure that will enable him to reach his full potential. Keep up the good work.

  4. congrats Josh!! keep up the great accomplishments. stay focused, have fun, and keep handling your business!
    PEACE!

  5. Congrats to Josh and his father I know the sacrifice and dedication involved in this endeavor. I think it is a testimony to the vision and reserve that he and his dad must have, especially with all things considered! To God be the glory!

  6. Exactly, Barry! God has richly gifted young Josh with a strong mind! So, I hope that he will continue to make good progress in chess. But most of all, I hope that he too will realize where his gifts comes from and declare as you have: “To God be the glory!” When one experiences success in life, it’s easy to get wrapped up in self or blinded by ones own light as it were!
