Zambia prepares for African Youth

News out of Zambia ahead of the African Juniors:

THE Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) has selected 36 young players comprising 18 boys and 18 girls to represent the country at next month’s African youth flagship event of the World Chess Federation in Lusaka.

The 2011 African Youth Chess Championships to be held at Baobab College in Lusaka from December 10-19 has drawn participation from Algeria, Angola, Egypt Libya Malawi Uganda and Zimbabwe.

CFZ president Lewis Ncube said in a statement yesterday that the tournament will cater to the elite African players in the youth age groups sections of under eight, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 18 years respectively.

Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) President, Lewis Ncube said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that countries start arriving in the country for the championship this week with Botswana being the first country to arrive on Friday.

Ncube said that so far nine countries had confirmed participation in the international championship, adding that the federation was still waiting for more confirmations.

He said Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi, Sudan, Zimbabwe, South Africa and hosts Zambia were the countries that had confirmed participation.

“Countries will start arriving this week and Botswana will be the first to arrive on Friday while the rest of the countries will arrive in Saturday,” Ncube said.
