Louisiana’s Phillips wins again!

Here is a blog report from Adam Caveney on Rene Phillips‘ win at the Louisiana Game/60 Championship. This follows Phillips Game/30 championship in March. Following is an excerpt:

Chess tournament organizers in Louisiana better make sure that they have a fire extinguisher on hand just in case Rene Phillips shows up, because Phillips is hot! After cruising to victory with a perfect 5-0 score at the 2009 Louisiana G/30 Championship in March, Phillips repeated the feat at the 2009 Louisiana G/60 Championship on May 9th by taking clear first and the title with a perfect 4-0 score. After winning his first three games in solid fashion, Phillips won the tourney in the final round with a sacrificial flurry that led to victory over second seeded Alex Steger.

  1. Thanks Pete and Glen, I’ll be there Bro! Tell the brothers in Philly I’m looking forward to the next city match at Malik’s house. Shouts to a fallen Athlete and Musical Genius, Wayman Tisdale who ended a 2 year bout with Cancer. I have won many games listening to Wayman’s Smooth Jazz.

  2. – Great job, “SWAT-TEAM” 🙂
    – hearing of Wayman Tisdale’s passing was depressing in a way though, just like the passing of Art Porter Jr, George Howard and Zachary Breaux; young Smooth Jazz greats taken waaay before their time 🙁

  3. Thanks Oke! Sup my brother? You a Smooth Jazz buff too? Solid. Hey will you be in Chicago or at the World? I have been muzzled on ICC for accusing a cheater of computer use during a tournament.

  4. Rene,
Yep, I’ll be in Chicago and Philly, my health and the Creator willing 🙂 Been under the weather recently, nothing serious, but quite annoying. Better now than later though, heh heh.

And yes, Smooth Jazz rulez! (though straight-ahead jazz is great too, lest the purists ask for my head 🙂 )

  5. Congrats Rene on the G/60 tourney victory. I need to time one of my family visits so that I can play in one of the La events. I still have the “Am” trophy that I won at the 1988 (!) La Pro/Am.

Sad news about Tisdale. He was a truly talented individual. If you haven’t done so yet, check out Terrence Blanchard’s A Tale of God’s Will .. it’s a requiem for Hurricane Katrina. I don’t know if its just the N.O. connection, or Terrence’s brilliance, but that CD can move ya.

  6. Thanks Rodney my Bro. will do. We would love to have you come back and play. I will go pick up Blanchard’s work. OK there is a shot I may be in Chicago, but Philly is a definite.

  7. Congrats Mr. Rene, I wish could find some serious tournaments with a shorter time control. I believe chess is moving in that direction G/120 is just too long. With computer cheaters going to the bathroom or outside to consult a stronger player or a computer, G/30 allows a player to stay at the board the whole game like an exam.

  8. Thanks Robert, I agree completely. I also believe if chess will ever be marketable to the masses via TV media, short time controls are a must. Undoubtedly the quality of the games will take a serious hit. I would like to see the chess move to quicker time controls a lot faster than the present trend.

  9. Why doesnt Rene ever publish the PGN so that we can play through the game?
Annotations are nice but we dont want to have to go through the article in order to play the game. Please publish PGN next time
