While Trinidad’s FIDE Master Ryan Harper, 34, is a long way from matching Cristo Cave’s record of 13 national championships, he is now one step closer with his recent win as reported by the T&T Guardian. Harper bested a field of 11 finalists finishing two points ahead of second place finisher Ravishen Singh. Singh dealt Harper his only loss, but Harper steamrolled the field scoring ten consecutive points. Singh was second with 8/11, 2009 winner Marcus Joseph 7.5/11 was third followed by FM Mario Merrit on 7/11.

Harper has recently left his position at a local bank to pursue a full-time coaching position for the Trinidad and Tobago national team. He will attend a FIDE training seminar in Brazil and will serve as Joshua Johnson, Trinidad’s under-12 participant in the World Youth championships. Apart from his coaching responsibilities, Harper still has aspirations to earn his IM title. He will compete at the Umada Cup in Barbados later this month. This was the tournament organized by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov during his campaign last year.
