The Olympiad tournament has a long history dating back to 1924 when 18 countries arrived in Paris. A lot has happened since that time. The curtains will open today on the 2008 Chess Olympiad as 1345 players from 154 nations will assemble in Dresden, Germany for a chance at gold. This year will bring heightened expectations as the women’s competition has been expanded and the format has been changed from board points to match points.

The defending champion is Armenia (men) and the Ukraine (women). Both teams have a good chance of defending their titles, but will be challenged by China and Russia. The tournament will extend until November 25th when the medals will be awarded in the closing ceremony. Predictions here.

  1. I gather Zambia are also playing with 2 players only and so are Uganda and Botswana’s arbiter was refused a VISA.I suspect teams like Kenya and Ghana are playing mainly with players who reside outside these countries. How does the Germany Embassy ask personal Finances information for a Sporting event??I have always trusted Germany efficiency but it turns out Germany Olympiad organisers cannot be trusted with Organising an Orgy in a brothel .
