Svidler takes Gibraltar Masters!

Peter Svidler defeats Vadim Milov in a tiebreaker to win the Gibraltar Chess Congress, Masters section. There was actually a five-way tie after nine rounds. The others involved in the tie were Hikaru Nakamura (who overcame two early losses), Pentala Harikrishna and Vugar Gashimov. Nakamura and Gashimov drew quickly while Svidler beat Harikrishna to break into joint first. Milov beat Boris Avrukh to join Svidler with 8/10.

Chess Drum favorite Pontus Carlsson of Sweden ended on 5.5/10 and faced Nakamura in the second round. Check out the game below.

Those reading The Chess Drum may know IM Kenny Solomon (South Africa) and Gilles Suez-Panama (Martinique). They played in the Gibraltar Masters Section scoring along with London-based Paul Obamiwe of Nigeria. All three scored 5/10.

Yes, I follow that tournament. Interesting games played in Gibraltar, although all three did not have a good tournament I enjoyed watching them play.

I hadn’t realized Solomon played until someone asked me how he did. I last saw him in Dresden, Germany for the Olympiad. I interviewed Gilles Suez-Panama in Trinidad. Paul has played in World Open and was at the HB Global tournament.
