January 2011 FIDE Rating list released!

Magnus Carlsen (2814, +12) has reclaimed the number one position on the FIDE rating chart with gains from the Pearl Spring and the London Classic. He overtakes Viswanathan Anand who saw a modest gain (2810, +6). There was a little movement amongst the top players as Sergey Karjakin (2776, +16) gained after his stellar performance at the Russian SuperFinal.

The other notable change was Hikaru Nakamura’s ascent to #10 after a good performance at the Tal Memorial and London Classic (2751, +10). This should put an end to all the naysayers who vowed that Nakamura would not even make 2700.

For the women, Judit Polgar (2686) continues to hold her position, but now has two players within reasonable striking distance. Koneru Humpy (2607, +7) and Women’s World Champion Hou Yifan (2602, +11). Both players could be at Polgar’s heels within a year’s time since they are both very active.

On the junior list, Fabiano Caruana (2721, +12) has finally topped the chart since Carlsen turned 20. The rising Anish Giri (2686, +4) is second and Wesley So is third (2673, +4). For the girls list, Hou Yifan looks like she’ll be at the top for many years to come. She is three years younger than Dronavali Harika (2520, -5) and compatriot Ju Wenjun (2516, -10).
