Round #5 Report  - Daniel Nsibambi (Uganda)

Hi All,

The Ugandans ran riot over their Kenyan brothers to register their biggest Olympiad win so far of 4 - 0. Grace Nsubuga  (2224) was on the mark again to register  his shortest win of this Olympiad. It took him just 18 moves in less than 30 minutes to overwhelm Kenyan Nathan Ateka (unrated) playing at Board 1. Nathan a seasoned Olympian for his country could not find sufficient firepower to withstand Grace's strong attacks.

The same story was repeated by Isaac Munanira (unrated) who breezed his way past Martin Gateri (unrated) in Uganda's second win on board 4. The third win came through Steven Kawuma (2053) who punished  Alex Makatia's blunder in a miscalculated  attack. Steven   gained   a free rook and forced Alex to abandon the game.

The last Ugandan win came through Shadrack Kantinti (2200) who won through a protracted struggle against another seasoned Olympian John Mukabi playing on board 2. Kantinti won a queen against a bishop and knight reducing John's fighting forces to a bare minimum. John  resigned soon thereafter .

The Ugandans now have 8.5 points gained from 5 rounds. Nsubuga has won three games, drawn once and lost narrowly to a Canadian Grandmaster he nearly beat in the first round. He has thus made  3.5 points for Uganda. Kawuma has made 2 points after winning once and drawing  twice and losing twice. Munanira has made 2 points in the three games he has played while Kantinti has made 1 point.

In the other games, Rwanda has at long last made it to the Olympiad camp after experiencing visa hurdles en route. They arrived straight into round 5 where they beat US Virgin Islands 2.5 - 1.5.
