The Little Giants chess team registered an upset 2.5 – 1.5 victory over King Rippers, as the LASCO Chess League got underway at the Holy Childhood High School Auditorium on Sunday.

The Little Giants team included Hakim Buchanan age 13, Stuart James age 12, Tewana Mellace age 10 and Brian Ewbank age 13. The losing King Rippers team included two National Masters in Robert Wheeler and John Powell, Jamaica Chess Federation President Ian Wilkinson and UWI student Raglon Wynter.

Winning for Little Giants were James on Board 2 against Wilkinson and Ewbank on Board 4 against Wynter. Buchanan drew a hard fought battle with Wheeler on Board 1 and Mellace lost to Powell on Board 3.

In other matches played on Sunday, the #1 seed Blitzkrieg Boys got past the #4 seed Varcon CC 2.5 – 1.5 and the #2 seed Knightmares put away #3 seed Gladiators by a similar score line.

Round 2 scheduled to begin at 1 pm on Sunday at the Holy Childhood Library, will see the Blitzkrieg Boys up against the Little Giants, Knightmares will challenge Varcon CC in the feature match and Reggae Knights will bow into action against the Gladiators.
