2007 World Cup Chess Championship
FIDE - Fédération Internationale des Échecs

The 2007 World Cup Chess Championship is currently in full swing. A total of 128 players gathered in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia to vie for a chance to face former FIDE Champion Veselin Topalov next year. The competition has been hated thus far but most of the favorites have been able to hold their positions. There will be some "upsets" but Vassily Ivanchuk remains the odds-on favorite.

Players from Asia, Africa, Latin America and other non-European nations will be looking to break the mold of European dominance of chess. That may not happen in this tournament, but China is definitely a force to be reckoned with. This tournament always produces breakthrough performances as it did when
Rustam Kasimjanov took the title in 2004.
