Gwaze scores big in SW Open!

Usually mentioning strong results in chess and using the name "Gwaze" would mean that one is referring to an International Master named Robert Gwaze. Less than a week ago, Tapiwa Gwaze was featured on The Chess Drum as a rising star in the Lone Star state of Texas. His star continues to rise after a scintillating 6½-½ performance in the 100-player Reserve (under-2000) section at the Southwest Open last weekend.

The victory probably means that the 14-year old star will set sights on playing in the under-2200 section in the near future. Gwaze ceded his only draw to
Derek Chang, but closed the tournament with a win over Jesse Lozano. Lozano,  who ended on 5½ points, shared joint 2nd with five others. In the 42-player Open section, IM Drasko Boskovic scored 6-3 to win 1st place.
