The Heroes Day Chess Tournament sponsored by Dr. Harold Munnings was held on Saturday 14th October, 2006. This event was the final qualifier for the Bahamas National Championship scheduled for next month.

The Open Division was won by The Bahamas Junior Champion,
Elton Joseph. The Reserve and Bishop Divisions were won by Tameko McDonald and Donovan Williamson respectively.

After a dramatic playoff between four of the six players finishing tie for second place,
Valentine Cox emerged as the tenth and final player to qualify for the Chess Nationals. That tournament will be rated by the World Chess Federation.

Cox joins the following 9 players in this tournament that will be rated by the World Chess Federation:

3. Joseph Ferguson,
4. Kean Smith,
5. Elton Joseph,
6. Ken Gibson,
7. Warren Seymour,
8. Charles Duncombe and 
9. Tameko McDonald.
