Campion College sixth-former Christopher Buchanan, is Jamaica's new National Junior Chess Champion. Buchanan secured the title after defeating National Women's Champion Deborah Richards in the final round of the National Junior Chess Championships at the Holy Childhood High School over the weekend.

Buchanan ended on 5½ points from 6 games, the same as defending champion
Brandon Wilson. However, Buchanan walked away with the coveted junior chess title after being adjudged the winner using the median tiebreak system.

Third place went to
Zachary Ramsay, who was also the best player under 16 years, while Richards was the top female player and Peta-Reid was the top female player rated under 1800.

With this victory, Buchanan has earned the right to represent Jamaica at the 2005 World Junior U-20 Chess Championships to be held in Turkey later this year and the Sagicor Open Junior Chess Tournament to be held in Barbados.
