South Africa's IM Johannes Mabusela won the African Junior Championship last year and by virtue of that feat, he automatically earned the IM title and won the right to represent his country in two international events. While funding was not forthcoming for the Dubai Open, Grintek Corporation assisted in helping Mabusela as well as the African Girl's champ Cecile van der Merve (also from South Africa) take part in the ongoing under-20 World Junior Championships in Azerbaijan. Mabusela, 18, was scheduled to play in the South Africa Closed Championships before the necessary funding came through.
