2002 World Open Information Center

More than 1400 chessplayers traveled from around the world to Philadelphia to participate in the 30th Annual World Open. This year there appeared to be more grumbling about the conditions of the Adams Mark hotel, but apart from a light malfunction in the largest playing room, the tournament conditions were decent.

The atmosphere was electric as players milled about throughout the week socializing, playing blitz, analyzing games, or shopping for books and equipment. As for chess, players could have chosen from the smorgasbord of events that were scheduled. There were six Action Chess tournaments (Game/30), one Game/10 event, and the ever popular Blitz event (Game/5), but the main event was the 9-round tournament which featured eight sections and large cash prizes!
