For those in the chess community unaware of the Chicago Harper Court controversy, the issue pertains to chess tables that were removed from a courtyard enclosed by numerous businesses. The Board responsible for removing the chess tables claimed that the chess tables were a nuisance and proprietors were losing business. The tables had been a visible fixture in the same location since the court was built in the 60s. Chess players staged an earlier protest that drew 60-70 supporters and resulted in 1000 petition signatures.
Local player M.L. Rantala is organizing a "Chess In! at Harper Court" protest on Saturday, August 24th from 2:00-5:00pm. She needs help in putting up posters and distributing flyers. To offer help or to find out more, contact M.L. Rantala at rants@interaccess.com.
