NM Andre Sergeon

Master Profile

Miami, Florida is the birthplace of this Maryland-based Master and his story of how he found chess is remarkable, yet a common one among the Black chess genre. Miami is a city brimming with exciting activities waiting to claim the innocence of unsuspecting youth. Andre, now an ordained deacon, realized this early and sought solace in chess at age 11. In his first tourney, Andre upset a 1900-rated player and at one time was ranked 19th in the U.S. for players under-17. The former Miami City Champion was expert-strength as he finished high school, and was the state's Amateur Champ in 1980. After leaving a path of fire in the chess halls of Miami, he trekked off to University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) where he would compete in two Pan-Am Intercollegiate tournaments for UF.  Also under his belt are consecutive ACUI championships in 1983 & 1984. After a bout of inactivity, Andre won the Eastern Open Amateur Open in 1992 and earned his Master's title. Andre's makes extensive use of  Chess Informants with a particular emphasis on combinations and endgames. His last action came at the 1996 U.S. Open. Besides chess, the 38-year old enjoys a variety of sporting events and is also a computer and electronic consultant.
