The TPR doesn't take into account the nuances of the rating formula. For example, things like K factor, bonus points and provisional status of opponent aren't used.

[...] I remember hanging out in Washington Square Park back in the summer of 1990. I lived at New York University during the summer while interning at Time-Warner. Maurice Ashley and I met there so I could discuss with him a chess network I envisioned (it became ‘The Chess Drum’). In the park, I learned of “Russian Paul” “Sweet Pea,” “Poe” and other characters. Chess rivalries were heated and dollars were flowing. Ernest Colding came down there too.
thanx. But are all dampening effects acconted for in the TPR itself? Or are some of them assessed above and beyond the TPR? Unless its the latter, 2233 + 2237 TPR looks like it should be zero ratings gain at worst.

thanx. It's weird though. He was rated 2714 at the start of the tourney and ends up gaining 3 points. His rating must've improved enough before the losing streak to compensate for the impending 5 loses.

According to 2700chess.com, Giri's new rating is expected to be 2717 after Wijk aan Zee.

Yes, those five consecutive losses hurt. However, in the preceding 12 games before that rough patch, Giri had scored 9.5 points.

Both Colas and Williams experienced a little less gain than normal from their draws with Mark Kai. This is because Kai's rating is still provisional. The rating system dampens the effect of any result against a provisionally rated player.

(Side note: Kai plays out of CMU in Pittsburgh right now. It's not clear that he's really 2500 strength, but he is definitely a master.)
